Apple opens Siri AI to actions in third-party apps
Apple is expanding Siri AI so it can perform actions across third-party apps. The capability is part of the iOS 27.3 update, which began rolling out Tuesday as a Developer Preview. Apple says developers can integrate Siri AI features into “all apps,” enabling the assistant to use a person’s personal context, understand natural-language requests, and interpret what is shown on screen.
The update introduces “app skills,” which developers can use to join several tasks into one action. Apple says users may not need to name an app when it is open in the foreground, involved in a Live Activity, or being discussed with Siri AI. Its example involves requesting a ride, monitoring the app’s Live Activity, and later asking Siri AI to change the pickup location.
Apple is also extending the capabilities to its own apps, including Calendar, Files, Finder, Journal, Mail, Maps, Messages, Music, Notes, Photos, Preview, Reminders, Safari, Shortcuts, and Weather. The company says users can ask Siri AI what actions are available in each app, such as finding a coffee shop visited the previous week or archiving files not opened for more than a year.
