Instagram admits users often can't tell AI profiles from real people
Singularity, as defined by Instagram user competence. Users can't tell AI profiles from real humans, so Instagram is swapping its "AI creator" tag for a new "AI-generated profile" label, the company announced. "We've heard that people don't like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated," Meta writes. Profiles without the label will see reach and recommendations throttled, though affected accounts can add it or appeal via Account Status. Creators who only use AI as a tool don't need it; those who opt in keep full reach.

Social media is drowning in AI-generated content. 21 percent of YouTube Shorts are already AI-generated, Instagram and Facebook are likely just as bad or worse, and video generators got major upgrades recently. LinkedIn is swimming in AI slop, and 35 percent of all new websites are fully or partly AI-written. In late 2024, Meta was still planning a "coexistence" of AI profiles and human users and even tried launching official AI characters. That went nowhere.
