Google launches Gemini for legal work to automate contracts and research

Google is launching Gemini for legal work. Gemini Enterprise for Legal uses MCP connectors to link Google's AI model with legal systems like iManage, NetDocuments, DocuSign, Everlaw, RelativityOne, and Thomson Reuters HighQ, as well as specialized AI services like Harvey. The system reviews contracts, runs legal research, and tracks regulatory changes while respecting existing access permissions. Partners like Deloitte sell ready-made AI agents for tasks like contract summarization. Google is targeting law firms and corporate legal departments.

According to Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, the product is available now as a preview and part of a new lineup of industry-specific AI solutions. A similar offering launched today for financial services, with healthcare and life sciences versions on the way.

Anthropic already offers similar plugin-based solutions for legal and other sectors. These industry-specific packages from all providers boil down to pre-built prompts, called "skills" because they can be executed and edited by agents, and connections to relevant data sources. The underlying AI models are the same ones in their standard products.
