Beatport blocks fully AI-generated music from its DJ marketplace

DJ marketplace Beatport is now banning music made entirely or mostly by AI. Tracks that use AI but are mostly made by humans are still allowed, though they'll be flagged as such.

To enforce the rule, Beatport uses a detection tool from its partner Beatdapp, which already handled streaming fraud detection. The company says the tool now filters out AI tracks during upload, and rights holders get a notice when a track is rejected. A Beatport survey found that 60 percent of users wouldn't play AI music in their sets, and 77 percent prefer human-made music. Only 8 percent are open to AI tracks, while 13 percent would consider them if artists were paid fairly.

Beatport CEO Matt Gralen said new production techniques have pushed electronic music forward from the start, but there's a difference between a tool that helps people and a system that replaces them entirely. Other platforms like Deezer have recently taken similar steps against the sharp rise in AI uploads. Deezer says nearly 50 percent of its daily uploads are AI-generated.
